For over three decades, Murrumbateman-based Matthew Harvie has honed his multi-disciplined creative skills, using various materials to create unique and striking pieces. From sculpting entirely from reclaimed materials to handcrafting a custom bed with brand-new materials, Matthew's experience and passion for creating are exceptional.
An Expansive Set of Skills
As a sculptor, Matthew's process is unique and often requires the design of custom tools or equipment to complete a work of art. Matthew leverages an expansive skill set, ranging from the intricate fine detailed work of hand engraving to the physical motion of carving with a chainsaw.
Designs Beyond Timber
While Matthew has a preference for working with timber, many pieces incorporate a range of materials, from metal and plastic to found and discarded objects.
Early in his artistic career, Matthew incorporated many free, found, used, and recycled products - often wood or metal to overcome budget and time constraints.
"As I have grown as an artist and honed my creative skills, I have been able to use new materials - however, I find myself regularly drifting back to the use of what is potentially rubbish."
