Epoxy Independent Testing

In response to a cheeky post on Instagram a few manufacturers of epoxy actually sent me some free samples to test. This has been an interesting journey and I’ll admit to learning nearly as much in the past weeks as I have in the few years leading up to it.

With encouragement from Dave (The Epoxy Guru) from Boatcraft and Carmen from Oakfield Clear, I have gone ahead and made some videos detailing some tests of their products.  ResinIt products were involved a little later in the process due to delays with their product because it’s made in the UK.

Whilst I’m happy to admit that my prowess with video production is nowhere near my talent with timber and metal, it has been a fun process and I hope it is informative for you.

Here is a basic reference chart for you to look at, with the 3 brands involved in my initial round of tests.

Brand Product $/L @ 6L Cure time Max Depth/Volume Mixing Ratio Shelf Life (claimed) Website
Oakfield Clear Deep Pour $33:35 7-14 days 30mm 2:1 12 months www.oakfieldclear.com
LuciClear Casting Resin $45:35 7-14 days 30mm 2:1 Unlimited https://boatcraft.com.au/informationpages/lccr.php
EliChem Deepcast $52:70 21 days 15L 2:1 12 months www.resinit.com.au/resin-river-table-cer

I can attest to the shelf life claims made here as I have had LuciClear sit in my shed for over 18 months and it did not crystallise like many other brands do. However, please note that even if they do crystallise, it is easy to return them to useable state by warming a little. This can be done in the microwave for small volumes or in warm water for larger amounts.

For more information do watch the videos and please subscribe so you can be kept up to date with more testing. These videos cover the whole process of making things with timber and epoxy, from setting up your mold through to sanding.

Here is my opening shot at making content rather than things;

Inspiration.
